Information and education play an important role in reducing the high number of waterborne diseases in rural and peri-urban regions of developing countries. In many places, the link between consuming contaminated water, poor hygiene, and the spread of disease is not well known. In addition to increasing access to clean drinking water with our Safe Water Enterprises and Water Energy Hubs, we provide comprehensive information to schools and communities.

Practical training that utilizes discovery-based learning forms the foundation of the program, ensuring the information provided is both applicable in the real world. After learning the material, community multipliers can spread their knowledge to the local population and incorporate it into everyday life. The methodology of hygiene education is based on principles used in the Siemens Stiftung education program Experimento. Locally-adapted approaches for social marketing that draw upon EAWAG Zurich’s RANAS Model for behavioral change are also used.
