Siemens Stiftung presents Education Projects at didacta Fair in Cologne
The Siemens Stiftung from March 16th to 20th at didacta 2010 in Cologne – Presentation of its Varied Commitments across all Levels of Education – Live Experiments for Primary Schoolchildren – Exhibition Booth in Hall 6.1
From March 16th to 20th the Siemens Stiftung will be presenting its comprehensive education program to a wide trade audience for the first time at Europe’s largest education fair. At its booth in Cologne the Foundation will be presenting its commitments to the MINT subjects (mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and technology), language acquisition and art appreciation across all levels of education – from the kindergarten to the start of a career. Educators, teaching staff of all levels and interested individuals are invited to gather information on the varied range in Hall 6.1, Aisle B, Booth 068.
The numerous education projects of the Siemens Stiftung pursue a holistic approach by promoting the MINT subjects: the aim here is to promote the technical competence of children and teenagers by means of early and sustained exposure to the natural sciences as well as through the fun of experimentation.
A varied program awaits visitors to the Foundation’s booth at didacta:
It starts at the earliest age: since language is the key foundation for good educational opportunities and integration into society the Siemens Stiftung particularly assists children from immigrant backgrounds from the age of three in their acquisition of the German language. It cooperates with the charity association Center for Multilingualism in Early Childhood (Zentrum für kindliche Mehrsprachigkeit e.V. – ZKM) and supports their KIKUS language acquisition method with language courses for children as well as continuing education courses for educators held across Germany.
The primary aim of the Forscherkiste is to give children a playful introduction to natural phenomena. 45 experiments on the topic of water, air, colours, electricity and sound arouse the inventive urge in children as young as three to six years of age. The Siemens Stiftung’s cooperation with the “Tiny Tots’ Science Corner” furthers its commitment in Germany. For international use there is the Discovery Box: right on time with didacta a campaign will kick off with a set of 100 free boxes each being given to kindergartens and pre-schools in five Eastern European countries.
With the natural sciences NaWi Experiment Kit from the project partner Wissensfabrik e.V. the Siemens Stiftung continues its promotion of education in early childhood at primary school level. A total of 46 experiment set-ups on the topics of air, water and foodstuffs help children understand something of the background of natural science. Guided by an instructor schoolchildren will be exploring natural science and technical processes at the fair. Basic knowledge on the use of tools and in the field of building and vehicle technology and electronic engineering is conveyed by the school project “KiTec – Children Discover Technology”.
The range for secondary schools focuses on pupils’ independent exploration of natural sciences and technology. The experiment kit “Ele-Klassenbox” Classroom Box featuring numerous materials and experiment set-ups on the topics of electronics and electronic engineering illustrates physical phenomena thereby contributing to pupils’ understanding of natural science. The box is aimed at assisting physics teachers from the 10th grade upwards with practice-oriented experiments. The evaluation stage will have been completed by didacta; teaching staff can apply for a box online.
Teaching staff and lecturers can convince themselves of the variety and user-friendliness of the Media Portal by visiting it on site. The online platform currently comprises over 1,800 German and English-speaking teaching materials on natural science themes like energy, water, hearing or light. Geared to lesson planning the media featured here deal with technical and social aspects and are suited to cross-subject teaching. After simple registration teaching staff can carry out targeted searches for suitable media and download these for free in just a few mouse clicks. The material is licensed for free use in lessons. The portal is continually expanded and updated. Further English-language materials as well as media in Spanish are in the pipeline.
The project stipend series “kiss – Culture in Schools and Universities” also supports teachers and those aspiring to this profession by preparing teaching materials on contemporary art and culture and by issuing stipends for students of music and arts education. What is special about the project is that renowned artists are enlisted here as mentors offering stipend recipients an opportunity to enter into a lively exchange about their works.
With its current motto “Energy Geniuses of the Future – Ideas for Improved Efficiency” the 2010 Pupils’ Competition in Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology organised by the Siemens Stiftung is just entering the national final. Schools can already gather information on the new competition for 2011 at didacta. Competition entries can be submitted from July 2010.
