Cooperation with the Frankfurt Book Fair: Siemens Stiftung committed to education in South African townships – Donation of experiment kits for children plus financing of a teacher for one year

The Siemens Stiftung is donating “Discovery Boxes” to support the “Reading and Learning Rooms” organized by LitCam, the education initiative of the Frankfurt Book Fair. These experiment kits contain materials and instructions for performing 22 experiments that provide pre-school children with an enjoyable introduction to natural phenomena. With this cooperation, the Siemens Stiftung is strengthening its global commitment to better opportunities in education and life. The objective of this project is to provide long-term support for literacy and learning to people living in the densely populated South African living areas (townships).

To this end, LitCam will set up three Reading and Learning Rooms (RaL Rooms) in Khayelitsha and Mfuleni, two large townships near the metropolis of Cape Town. These public rooms will provide books and learning materials as well as new learning technologies for children and adults alike. The Siemens Stiftung will equip two of the rooms with Discovery Boxes and will finance a teacher there for one year who will support the students in the RaL Room. Through this joint initiative, the township residents receive easy access to education and can advance their reading, writing and science skills in classes, workshops and author readings that are held on a regular basis.

The project started on July 29, 2010 with the opening of the first RaL Room in the Women for Peace Center in Mfuleni. Additional RaL Rooms and a library will be opened in the townships by October 2010. The library will receive a Discovery Box from the Siemens Stiftung, too.
