Generative AI in the classroom: How Open Educational Practices adapt learning to local contexts

Learning is about more than just imparting knowledge. Open Educational Resources (OERs) provide spaces in which young people can explore their curiosity and creativity, developing new perspectives on technology and artificial intelligence.

A joint project by Siemens Stiftung and the Universidad de Antioquia (Colombia) shows how open educational practices can support teachers in meaningfully integrating new technologies into their classrooms. The initiative is part of Siemens Stiftung’s commitment to promoting Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP) internationally, and to supporting teachers in co-creating, adapting, and sharing learning materials.

At the center of the initiative were Open Educational Resources (OER) on generative AI, which were further developed together with teachers in a series of workshops. Working in local teams, participants adapted the materials to their classroom realities – supported by mentoring and an AI chatbot that accompanied the development process.

The project highlighted the importance of contextual adaptation. In a rural school in Antioquia, where neither individual devices nor stable internet access are available, teachers developed creative low-tech approaches to teaching AI concepts. This made it possible to explore how algorithms and digital systems work even without digital infrastructure.

The project demonstrates that innovative education depends not only on technology, but on collaborative pedagogy and shared learning. When teachers jointly develop, test, and adapt learning materials to their local contexts, they create learning formats that are both relevant and sustainable.

Video series „Educar con IA desde el territorio”

The experiences and results of the project groups have been documented in a video series.

Podcast „Conexiones que enseñan“

In addition, the podcast “Conexiones que enseñan” explores how teachers use Open Educational Practices, OER, and digital technologies to open up teaching and co-create knowledge within educational networks.
