In Kenya’s capital Nairobi, only about one third of waste is disposed of in a manner comparatively friendly to the environment and health. A large part of the population burns waste or stores it illegally within their neighborhoods, often resulting in serious health problems
TakaTaka Solutions (taka taka is the Swahili phrase for waste) has developed an approach for a waste management system affordable even to lower income groups. The system contributes to sustainable resource conservation by recycling up to 80 percent of the waste while generating earnings at the same time.
Regular waste collection significantly improves living conditions in communities. Awareness campaigns instruct customers and school classes on waste separation and create an understanding for the problems that waste poses for the environment and individual health. Another advantage: young people receive permanent jobs and the necessary training.
