KIKUS digital is a language-learning software for education experts. The software enables language to be taught in a modern, systematic, and clear with a whiteboard or PC. The aim of the joint project between Siemens Stiftung and the Center for Multilingualism in Early Childhood (zkm) is to improve the language skills of children from different cultural backgrounds by using state-of-the-art media.

The software is based on the tried-and-proven KIKUS picture cards. They enable educators to take a playful approach to practicing grammar, vocabulary, and patterns of speech. The pictures can be combined in a wide range of ways, enabling language to be portrayed in a vivid way. KIKUS digital expands the possible uses of the KIKUS method. For example, the picture cards have a function that enables pupils to listen to the base form of the card captions; they can also be labeled on the whiteboard and duplicated as often as necessary, giving  educators countless creative opportunities to prompt children’s speech.

This flexibility enables teachers to address the individual needs of their pupils; those with a weaker command of the language of instruction can still actively participate and learn successfully. KIKUS digital is first and foremost aimed at primary school teachers, but can also be used for working with younger or older pupils. In addition, KIKUS digital also enables children’s first language to be integrated, thus promoting respect for and openness toward other cultures.

The language-learning software is available to education experts in the media portal of Siemens Stiftung in German, English and Spanish and can be used worldwide free of charge.
