With a view toward Europe: The media portal of the Siemens Stiftung has been awarded the Erasmus EuroMedia Seal of Approval
The media portal of the Siemens Stiftung, which provides educators with up to date, pedagogically sound teaching materials, has been recognized with the Erasmus EuroMedia Seal of Approval. This renowned honor is awarded by the European Society for Education and Communication (ESEC) for educational products that critically examine perspectives, problems, and challenges for European societies. Of the approximately 200 entries from 17 countries, 38 received the seal this year. The award ceremony took place on October 15, 2010, in Vienna.
The media portal of the Siemens Stiftung was designed from the beginning to allow content to be used in countries other than Germany. It was launched in German, but just a few months later, in May 2009, an English user interface was added, facilitating worldwide access to the teaching materials held in multiple languages. A user interface in Spanish is planned for the end of this year. In addition, the content meets cross-European education objectives. For example, the portal offers media files on climate, the environment, and resource scarcity, as well as social and societal aspects such as fair distribution and humanitarian aid. Since the media can be downloaded and used free of charge, educational institutions can benefit from them regardless of their financial situation.
“This was the first time that we applied for the EuroMedia Seal of Approval with the media portal. For us, receiving the seal is a confirmation of the path we have taken to offer educators in Europe and around the world high-quality, didactically sound digital teaching materials,” commented Maria Schumm-Tschauder, Project Director of the Siemens Stiftung, who accepted the award in Vienna.
Since 1995 the ESEC has awarded the EuroMedia Award in recognition of international media productions whose extraordinary quality contributes to fruitful discussion on the development of society and values in Europe. This includes media products in the area of education.
