kiss – Culture in Schools and Universities: Contemporary Architecture
The current publication in the project series kiss – Culture in Schools and Universities collates the results of the scholarships for future art teachers on the topic of “Contemporary Architecture” in schools. This booklet not only gives interested teachers, trainee teachers and students of education ideas but also concrete teaching material for them to use.
“Architektur wird eingeschult” (“Architecture is sent to school”) is the title of the architecture journal Bauwelt dated 12/29/2008 that reports on the kiss stipend program. In the fall of 2008 students of art education applied for stipends in the field of contemporary architecture from an independent jury. The architects Prof. Peter Ebner from the office Ebner/Ullmann, Prof. Gunter Henn from Henn Architekten, Johannes Kuehn from Kuehn Malvezzi and Jacob van Rijs from the Dutch architects? office MVRDV agreed to act as mentors for the project and work out teaching units with „their? selected stipend recipients over the course of several personal meetings.
Benjamin Gladis (University of Leipzig) traveled several times to Rotterdam to get to know the unusual work of MVRDV with Jacob van Rijs. Rolf Kurz (Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design, Halle and Martin Luther University) was mentored by Johannes Kuehn from the Berlin architects? office Kuehn Malvezzi that recently won special prize for its Stadtschloss Berlin competition entry. Isa Lange (University of Hildesheim) got to know the work of Prof. Gunter Henn as well as the importance of conveying architecture through many encounters and visits to Munich, Dresden and Wolfsburg while Johanna Riese (Dresden University of Technology) undertook various architectural explorations of space with Austrian architect Prof. Peter Ebner and discovered a great deal about modern architecture as a place of communication.
The teaching units and materials used at selected schools between spring and summer 2009 were illustratively put together in this booklet by Benjamin Gladis, Rolf Kurz, Isa Lange and Johanna Riese. The idea is for them to prompt imitation. A fundamental article on the role of architecture in art lessons by Riklef Rambow, architectural theory professor at the University of Technology Cottbus dealing with the didactics of the subject, expertly introduces the publication. In exemplary fashion the individual contributions sharpen and sensitize pupils? awareness of the designed world around them.
Since 2004 the Siemens Arts Program (today part of the Siemens Stiftung) has been devoted to the promotion of arts education in schools. Just like in previous years when kiss was devoted to contemporary music, the visual arts (film, photography and video art) as well as theater and new drama, the Siemens Stiftung now also makes the produced publication available to interested teaching staff free of charge.
And kiss is moving on! This year as part of a cooperation existing since 2008 with the BDK e.V. Fachverband für Kunstpädagogik, Germany's largest countrywide specialist association for art education, students of art education will once again be sponsored (closing date for applications: March 1, 2010). Five artists – Christoph Girardet (Hanover), Jakob Kolding (Berlin), Gerald Nestler (Vienna), Susan Philipsz (Berlin) and Katharina Zdjelar (Rotterdam) – will assist the stipend recipients in the elaboration of their teaching units.
