The media portal on a growth course
Since its launch in 2009, the media portal of the Siemens Stiftung has been continuously updated and expanded. The results are impressive: Currently there are more than 4,000 teaching materials on scientific, technical, social, ecological, and cultural topics that support teachers in their efforts to provide up-to-date instruction. It is not only the number of materials that is steadily increasing, but also the variety of formats and the volume of multilingual media. The diverse offering has won over many educators – the media portal currently has more than 10,000 registered users.
With its online portal, the Siemens Stiftung is providing modern Web technologies for research and to make teaching materials available for elementary through secondary school levels. With just a few clicks of the mouse, teachers can search for appropriate materials that follow curriculum guidelines and, after completing a simple registration, download them for free. The diversity of media and topics supports practice-oriented lesson plans and provides numerous opportunities to actively integrate children and youth into educational work, fostering their networked thinking and media literacy.
The broad portfolio of more than 4,000 media reflects this objective: It includes graphics, flash animations, audio files, worksheets, link lists, and more. Last but not least, it also provides interactive content packages for use with whiteboards or PCs and video projectors. Existing media packages are gradually being expanded to include these new formats. They promote interactive communication of the subject matter and motivate the students to get involved in using digital media. Currently, the media portal offers 188 media packages and 43 content packages for interactive whiteboards for elementary and secondary schools.
In addition to the German materials, the online portal also provides numerous English and Spanish media that can be used, for example, for bilingual instruction. The content is currently being expanded to include four content packages on the topics of air, globalization, statistics, and probability. In recent years, the Siemens Stiftung has established numerous partnerships with educational institutions that inform their teaching staff of the availability of the materials on the media portal.
