Siemens Stiftung media portal strengthens vocational training in Middle East and North Africa: New partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

The Siemens Stiftung has a new education partner: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. At the center of the partnership is the TVET Portal, a free online professional and social network for vocational training and e-learning in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) established by GIZ on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) together with partner institutions in the region. The portal seeks to facilitate a cross-border exchange of information and experience, bundle expertise, and promote an ongoing learning process. The teaching materials of the media portal will now play a role here: Effective immediately, TVET Portal users have access to the media portal’s library of over 4,000 digital media.

The partnership gives education professionals who work in vocational training and continuing education in these countries access to an expanded online library of free teaching materials. A wealth of new content in English and German with an emphasis on science and technology is now available to users of the TVET Portal. State-of-the-art media formats such as interactive whiteboard files, worksheets, and experimentation instructions can now be used in vocational training in the Middle East and North Africa.

“We are pleased to help improve the quality of vocational training in the MENA region through this partnership. The 4,000 instructional media explore real-world issues of science, technology, and ecology, making them an ideal fit with vocational training curricula. We’ve already had positive experience with this in Germany and other countries,” emphasizes Maria Schumm-Tschauder, project director of the Siemens Stiftung media portal.

“Access to the instructional media of the Siemens Stiftung gives users of our TVET Portal targeted educational teaching material with full copyright permissions,” explains Dr. Klaus Bader-Labarre, senior project manager in the section HCD for Vocational Education and Training. “We are happy to be able to add the Siemens Stiftung media to our high-quality database on the Portal.”

Expanded media library through metadata transfer
Metadata transfer makes it possible to search the media portal content through the TVET Portal. The Siemens Stiftung shares only the descriptions of the media (metadata); the media themselves remain on the Siemens Stiftung servers. The metadata include such information as the title, content description, classroom subjects, class levels, copyright information, and keywords based on content and educational criteria. Users who find media through the TVET Portal are directed to the media portal, where the media are available for free download.
