“How can I plunge into research?” was the theme for participants in the student competition 2009 in math, science and technology – then still coordinated by Siemens AG. More than 400 junior scientists from throughout Germany accepted this challenge and immersed themselves in the topic of water.
The breadth of the papers submitted ranged from theoretical ideas of soil desalination using electro-kinetically driven mass flows to practical uses for wool to protect against water pollution. The jurors were enthusiastic.
In the end, top honors in 2009 went to Pirmin Kelbel and Florian Dücker for their idea to use the sound conductivity of water to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. The two students from Lüdenscheid (North Rhine-Westphalia) received a gold medal and €30,000 in prize money. Second place went to Kerstin Saul from Michelstadt in Hesse for her paper on “experimental studies on electrodialysis.” Third place went to the team of Susanna Goetze, Daniel Rönnpagel and Udo Hildebrandt from the Richard-Wossidlo-Gymnasium in Waren, Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania for their system for purifying drinking water in Africa.
