At an official ceremony in the auditorium of the San Nicholás business center near Medellin, attended by more than 150 guests, 47 agricultural engineers and 19 farm managers received their certificates. Among the speakers were Liliana Gaitán Pérez, Director of the Fundación El Cinco, the initiator of the "Fruqueña" project, Sergio Velázquez Fernández from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the government of the Antioquia province, and Ulrike Wahl, Managing Director of the Siemens Stiftung.
"The integrated project approach, "Modelo de Solidaridad Productiva", of the Fundación El Cinco provides a realistic and attractive option for the future for the next generation and lays the foundation for sustainable development in rural areas," said Ulrike Wahl in her statement at the event. "The cooperation model between private and public partners – Public Private Partnership (PPP) – can very easily be applied to other regions and countries." The Antioquia government is also supporting this project approach in order to effectively strengthen the regional economic and social structures.
At the Technical College for Fruit Growing and Horticulture young people are trained to become young agricultural entrepreneurs and agricultural consultants. The course program is certified by the Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje (SENA) and imparts agricultural knowledge for modern, environmentally compatible cultivation methods in fruit growing, organizational skills, marketing know-how and commercial expertise to open up attractive career paths and promising prospects for the young people as agricultural entrepreneurs and consultants in the region.
Alongside the technical know-how, the course also covers social skills such as community work. The young people have set themselves a special challenge of setting up a self-supporting social enterprise which provides consulting services for agriculture in the region. With the foundation of the "Asociación LIDERA" the young people have taken the first step toward tackling this difficult task. The young people's enterprise will be continued, with the ongoing support of the Fundación el Cinco, primarily in the areas of strategy, design, logistics and implementation of marketing plans.

Tobias Pickert and Marc Strohmann (1st place, EUR 20,000) shared the winner’s podium with Max Burggraf of the secondary school Gymnasium Tutzing (2nd place, EUR 15,000 for “Chasing the sun – Building sun tracking systems”) and with Christian Rinkens of the Inda Gymnasium secondary school in Aa-chen (3rd place, EUR 10,000 for “Building a pumped-storage power plant at the Hambach coal mine”). Paulina Banszerus of the St. Michael Gymnasium secondary school in Bad Muenstereifel was awarded a special prize (EUR 10,000) for her project “More Waste for the Environment!”
S.D. Georg Fuerst Starhemberg, member of the Siemens Stiftung Board of Trustees, presented the awards at the awards ceremony. The monetary prizes may only be used for college education purposes. The mentoring teachers were also honored for their departments. In total, monetary prizes of approxi-mately EUR 100,000 were awarded.
“Through their work, these young people have made a concrete contri-bution to improving environmental and climate protection, and in so doing, they have demonstrated social responsibility,” said Georg Bernwieser, member of the Siemens Stiftung Board of Directors. Dr. Barbara Filtzinger, head of Strategy and Programs, emphasized: “It is very important to us that high school students continue to develop their talents by choosing to study scientific and technical subjects in college. That is why we offer them and their fellow contestants the chance to remain in contact with us and the partner universities through our alumni network.”
Dr. Matthias Mann expressed his respectful appreciation of the students’ innovative work on scientific topics and their highly motivated approach. After all, promoting research on all levels, both great and small, is a necessary prerequi-site for educating highly qualified scientists.
In 2013, the Siemens Stiftung will once again seek out talented young people, this time on the subject of: “City-Country-River: Planning for the future is a necessity!”
About the student competition
The annual Siemens Stiftung student competition in math, science and technology is open to upper-level secondary school students in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and at German schools elsewhere in Europe. The competition gives the young students an opportunity to become actively involved in current social policy challenges. The Siemens Stiftung has partnered with the esteemed universities RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin and TU Munich to ensure the scientific quality of project submissions. Another key concern is that the partici-pants receive long-term support. The Siemens Stiftung helps the talented young students define their own future through earmarked prize money, infor-mation seminars at the partner universities and tutors who provide individual college counseling. As of 2011, the Siemens Stiftung student competition is also a member of Germany’s National Consortium of Student Competitions (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der bundesweiten Schülerwettbewerbe).

The jurors of this year’s student competition were Prof. Dr. Armin Schnettler (RWTH Aachen), Prof. Dr. André Bardow (RWTH Aachen), Prof. Dr. Martina Ziefle (RWTH Aachen) Prof. Dr. Frank Behrendt (TU Berlin), Prof. Dr. Susanne Rotter (TU Berlin), Prof. Dr. Dr. Martina Schaefer (TU Berlin), Prof. Dr. Oliver Junge (TU Muenchen), Prof. Dr. Claudia Nerdel (TU Muenchen), Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schreiber (TU Muenchen), Dr. Jeanne Rubner (Bayerischer Rundfunk).

ENCOURAGE. empowering people.
World Water Day: The Siemens Stiftung and its partners join forces to build additional water kiosks in rural Kenya

The Siemens Stiftung is helping to bring drinking water to rural areas, relying on proven technologies, financial self-sustainability, local ownership, and additional training. With its water kiosk program, the Siemens Stiftung is also focusing on modern technologies and well-trained kiosk managers to give people in remote regions access to clean drinking water and pave the way to better health and hygiene. The kiosks also provide opportunities for income and entrepreneurship and help unlock the potential for further development. Since the kiosks are linked to existing community structures such as marketplaces, schools, or hospitals, they often help shorten what were otherwise long trips to obtain potable water. Even though the long-term goal must still be to connect every household to the water grid, water kiosks are an important step on that path.
The Siemens Stiftung has launched pilot projects with proven partners. In Kenya, two water stations were built last year in collaboration with the SkyJuice Foundation, PureFlow Water Solutions, and the Global Nature Fund. In the coming weeks, four more communities in the Thika region northeast of Nairobi will taste the benefits of clean drinking water. The initial sites have already been chosen in consultation with community representatives, health centers, and water committees, and construction is underway.

“These distinctions validate our dedication to sustainable, forward-looking education”, remarks Dr. Barbara Filtzinger, Head of Programs & Strategy at the Siemens Stiftung. “We actively promote science and language instruction from preschool through secondary school. It is very important to us to pursue both of these areas together. That makes it all the nicer that both projects have now been honored simultaneously.”

Media portal supports education for sustainable development
The Siemens Stiftung media portal has once again been recognized by the German UNESCO Commission as a project of the “Education for Sustainable Development” World Decade for 2012/13. The free online platform currently offers over 3,000 materials for teaching basic science and technology and addressing social, ecological, and cultural issues. The international media portal promotes global learning – a shining example of the objectives of the United Nations global educational initiative. The online portal was already an official entry of the UN Decade in 2010/2011. The jury acknowledged the project as an impressive example of forward-looking education offering a clear picture of how people can act sustainably. The UN Decade “Education for Sustainable Development” is a global educational initiative. The United Nations member states proclaimed the decade for 2005 through 2014, thereby committing to incorporate the concepts of sustainable development into their educational systems. The certificates will be presented during the UNESCO Day ceremonies at the didacta trade show in Hanover on February 15, 2012. The media portal and its teaching materials were first honored as highly recommended for educational use at the international MEDEA Awards in November 2011.

The competition “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” has demonstrated the shared commitment of the Siemens Stiftung and zkm when it comes to promoting language instruction in young children. The partnership focuses on spreading the KIKUS language development method for children of various backgrounds ages three and up. The KIKUS method was developed by zkm. The jury honored the project with the title of “Selected Landmark 2012” in the Land of Ideas. The nation-branding initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas”, under the patronage of the German President and in cooperation with Deutsche Bank, honors 365 innovative and influential ideas each year that generate passion and have a lasting impact on the future viability of Germany. Even amid a competitive field of over 2,000 submissions, the KIKUS language development partnership greatly impressed the independent jury. The official awards ceremony will take place on September 25 on the occasion of zkm’s tenth anniversary. On this day, KIKUS will be the “selected landmark 2012.”

Expert Talk at Zeppelin University, Friedrichshafen on January, 20 2012

At Zeppelin University’s public ‘Research Day’, which took place on January, 20 2012, an interested audience heard IRENE I SEE student Aline Wachner present her doctoral project, which is funded by the Siemens Stiftung as part of IRENE I SEE. The introduction was given by Prof. Stephan A. Jansen, the President and Managing Director of Zeppelin University. He spoke about the IRENE I SEE program, which has been founded as an initiative of the Siemens Stiftung and is managed and coordinated by the Zeppelin University.
The IRENE I SEE research program started last year with selected African and Latin American universities where the doctoral studies on particular issues of “Social Economic Empowerment” and Social Entrepreneurship of promising PhD candidates are funded. He was followed by Dr. Lisa Hanley, a postdoc member of the academic staff at Zeppelin University and science manager for IRENE I SEE, who introduced the general background, the core questions and the objectives of this project. She also described where IRENE I SEE stands in relation to the ‘Encourage. Empowering People’ program of the Siemens Stiftung and explained how IRENE I SEE represents an equally concrete contribution to scientific education. After Dr. Hanley’s contribution, Aline Wachner – incorporating the latest international research – presented her doctoral project with the title “From Accountability to Social Economic Empowerment: Locating Social Entrepreneurship in the Global South”. She demonstrated how the process of accountability and the pattern of responsibilities within a social enterprise differ from those in a purely market-oriented business. The central question of her research is: “Does the market-orientation of social businesses really increase their downward accountability?” After her presentation, Aline Wachner discussed her theses with the audience.
The event was held in the English language.

didacta 2012: Siemens Stiftung expands portfolio for teachers – in Hall 16, D19

The theme of the Siemens Stiftung at this year’s didacta education trade fair is “STEM – understanding, experiencing, comprehending” with a focus on language instruction and the natural sciences. At the event in Hanover from February 14 to 18, 2012, the foundation will present new teaching materials and methods in a digital format available on its online media portal. Available for the first time is KIKUS digital, the language-learning software tailored to the needs of today’s primary school language classes. Another highlight is the Experimento project, featuring experiments that illustrate a wide array of energy, environment, and healthcare topics. New content packages for interactive whiteboards round out the media portal’s offering. Teachers have the opportunity to attend live sessions at Booth D19 in Hall 16 for tips on how to systematically integrate language instruction, scientific experiments, and whiteboard projects.

The Siemens Stiftung believes that language is the key to academic success – with a focus on the STEM subjects from kindergarten to graduation. The foundation’s educational projects support teachers with language-learning programs, online teaching materials, innovative teaching methods that enable students to discover scientific phenomena, and advanced teacher training opportunities.

KIKUS digital: interactive language-learning software for primary schools
(available in German language only)
At didacta, the Siemens Stiftung will present the language development method KIKUS (“Children in Cultures and Languages”), evolved by the Zentrum für kindliche Mehrsprachigkeit e.V. (“Center for Multilingualism for Children”), in its new interactive format for whiteboard or PC. The application is available for free download from the Siemens Stiftung media portal. KIKUS digital is targeted at primary school instructors and language schools. The aim is to expand, vary, and modernize language instruction. KIKUS digital – available as an online or offline Windows application – makes language-learning fun with its playful approach to vocabulary training, sentence construction, and exercises for word formation and articles. The idea is to create a level playing field, promote intercultural understanding, and achieve integration. Digital picture cards make it possible to tailor the language instruction to each individual child, so that even children with a lesser command of the language of instruction can be actively involved and make progress. KIKUS digital is based on the tried and tested KIKUS teaching materials that help preschool and primary school children learn a first or second language.

Experimento – discover, explore, explain
The media portal also offers digital instructions for experiments and other materials such as worksheets and information sheets for the new Experimento project. The underlying concept of Experimento is that children best understand scientific phenomena through independent, discovery-oriented learning. Experimento encompasses a diverse, curriculum-oriented selection of experiments on the subjects of energy, the environment, and healthcare for the age groups 4–7, 8–12, and 10–18. Experimento encompasses step-by-step instructions and three experiment kits that build upon one another as well as teacher training. This part of the project is currently in the pilot phase in Chile and South Africa.

Media portal – register, download, use
The Siemens Stiftung media portal helps teachers prepare and present their lessons with over 3,000 teaching materials on scientific, technical, social, and cultural topics. At didacta, the media portal will present not only KIKUS digital and Experimento but a variety of content packages for interactive whiteboards designed for science instruction in primary and secondary schools. The child-friendly layout offers tips for teaching science and technology in primary schools, with topics such as globalization, nutrition, optical phenomena, and stochastics. For secondary schools, media and content packages for interactive whiteboards have been developed for topics such as the cycle of water and renewable energies. The media portal content has been developed by educators for educators in a well-organized, modular structure. The media can be customized to fit your own teaching approach and are adaptable to various age groups and academic subjects.

As a partner of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation & Development, the Siemens Stiftung...

From today, companies across the world can submit their applications for the G20's "Challenge on Inclusive Business Innovation" ideas competition. The competition was launched during the G20 Summit in Cannes in November 2011 and is part of the G20 development pillars. The objective of the competition is to identify and promote innovative, scalable and replicable business models which help increase development and reduce poverty in a sustainable manner.
From December 1, 2011 to February 29, 2012, companies are invited to submit their applications on the Internet site
. A jury made up of representatives from the G20 member states, international organizations, the private sector and the sciences will select up to 15 winners who will be showcased during the next G20 Summit in Mexico in 2012. In the regional workshops to be held later, the entrepreneurs will be able to exchange experiences, meet relevant stakeholders, find new partners and together learn how to transfer their business models to other markets. An important aspect of this is that the entrepreneurial approaches make an effective contribution to social and economic inclusion.
Ulrike Wahl, Chief Operating Officer for the Siemens Stiftung: "The G20 Challenge on Inclusive Business Innovation provides an effective stimulus both to economic development and to strengthening social structures. In its project work the Siemens Foundation supports socio-entrepreneurial approaches which aim to provide scalability for innovative models. Our main concern is to maximize the ‘community impact’, in other words to improve the overall quality of life; we want above all to incorporate this experience into the design and content of the regional workshops".
As co-facilitator of the G20 development pillars, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation & Development is now also taking on a leading international role in promoting inclusive business models. In the G20 Challenge, the Siemens Stiftung is working hand in hand with the BMZ on the workshops for the winners which will last several days and take place after the competition.
