Science education helps leverage a country’s future potential and ensure long-term social development. The sooner the necessary appreciation of science and technology is cultivated in young people, the better. The Siemens Stiftung’s media portal, a free online platform for digital teaching materials, aims to help teachers and education professionals develop and deliver contemporary lesson plans.

The media portal and its content are continually updated and expanded to include new topics, languages, and practical applications. This provides a greater incentive to employ contemporary learning and teaching methods and promote global education. The user interface and media are available in English, German, and Spanish.

The content package for interactive whiteboards entitled “How a sewage plant works” introduces students to the topic of sewage treatment and teaches them how to use water sustainably.

The media portal also features other educational projects of the Siemens Stiftung. The language learning software KIKUS digital (in German only) and the instructions for the Experimento projects will be available online after the didacta 2012 education trade show, for example.

Register, download, use

Once the simple registration process is complete, a few clicks is all it takes for teachers to find the materials they need and download them for free. The over 3,000 online media – prepared especially for classroom use and tailored to the curriculum – teach the essentials of science and technology while also addressing social, ecological, and cultural aspects. The spectrum of teaching materials ranges from content packages for interactive whiteboards to graphics, audio files, worksheets, step-by-step experiments, video clips, and much more. The media are available individually or in predefined media packages with tips for classroom use.

Real-world materials and examples are designed to spark students’ enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at a young age and maintain and nurture this interest from preschool through secondary school. A solid education in the STEM subjects coupled with exposure to new media and language skills enhance the career opportunities of young people and help sensitize them to the challenges facing the world today.
