Bethsatha orphanage in Kisumo, Kenya

Although Kenya’s economy has stabilized in recent years, the country is facing the catastrophic consequences of the immune deficiency disease AIDS. According to the estimates of the Welthungerhilfe (World Famine Aid), 30 percent of Kenya’s poorest people are HIV positive, and in addition there is a high number of unknown victims who have never been tested. In the harbor town of Kisumo on the north shore of Lake Victoria, the HIV rate is 34 percent, the highest in the country, and in some suburbs it is even as much as 49 percent. In Kisumo, Stiftung UNESCO is therefore supporting a reception center and community center for 300 AIDS orphans. An orphanage is extended to provide direct care for 32 orphans, while 270 children will be looked after by foster families. To improve the health of the children, many of whom are severely weakened, the orphanage is also being provided with SkyHydrants to ensure a supply of clean drinking water.
