Drinking water and education generate income

The Siemens Stiftung is supporting drinking water projects in Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, and Kenya...

All the projects are implemented in close cooperation with partners and adapted to the unique needs of the local communities. What they have in common is a reliance on water filtration technology, a focus on education and financial sustainability.
Technology is part of the solution. We work with customized, low-maintenance water filters to bring contaminated water up to drinking standards. We have primarily used the membrane filters supplied by Australia’s SkyJuice Foundation, which remove all bacteria and viruses from up to 1,000 liters of water per hour while requiring no electricity and only minimal maintenance.
Education campaigns are key to changing the behavior of children and adults when it comes to hygiene and nutrition. The communities already have access to sensitization programs, and these activities will be expanded whilst going forward. The kiosk manager is also trained in health, technology, finance, bookkeeping, and marketing.
It is also important that the projects are financially sustainable. The micro-businesses are designed from the start to become self-supporting over the medium term and not rely on donations. Close cooperation with the communities is critical here as well. The local population – as water kiosk customers – will care about quality, price, and reliability, after all. Evaluations of the water kiosks and how they are used are conducted to improve acceptance. One result of this process is that the kiosks now offer cleaned plastic containers to preserve the quality of the water during transport. Improvements to the buildings were also made: Prefabricated modules allow quick and secure setup but are still flexible enough to be moved to another site when the water situation changes.
Partnerships with other organizations at the local and international level are a cornerstone of all our projects. This bundles expertise, networks, and resources for a concerted and effective approach to ensuring access to safe drinking water.
The Siemens Stiftung is currently involved in the following water projects:

“I was thrilled to see what ambitious solutions the contestants aimed for. It wasn’t just the technical quality of their ideas that was impressive – these young people also had their eye on practical applicability,” said Dr. Nathalie von Siemens, Managing Director and spokeswoman of the Board of Directors of the Siemens Stiftung. “Of course applying technical solutions for the benefit of humanity is a long-standing Siemens tradition. All the more reason why I’m so pleased that our competition has been able to motivate young people to take an active role in helping to shape the future of our society.”
The award recipients were: Marion Kreins (First Place/ St. Michael-Gymnasium, Bad Münstereifel/ Topic: Nitrogen stabilizers), Jonas Engelhard (Second Place/ Paul-Pfinzing-Gymnasium, Hersbruck/ Topic: Increasing efficiency of water treatment plants through sedimentation measurement) and Moritz Gutsch (Third Place/ St.-Antonius-Gymnasium, Lüdinghausen/ Topic: Influence of number of blades, blade profile, rotor diameter and onflow conditions on the speed & efficiency of an H-Darrieus rotor). Nils Hellmann (Pamina-Gymnasium, Herxheim/ Topic: Fight the silent electricity guzzlers: mobile phone charger with real 0-watt standby power consumption) won the special prize.
All prize money can only be used to finance the students’ education. In addition to the students, the faculty mentors also receive cash prizes for their departments in their schools.
In 2014 the Siemens Stiftung will once again seek out young people with their ideas for meeting the challenge of transforming the energy mix.

About the student competition
The annual Siemens Stiftung student competition in math, science and tech-nology is open to upper-level secondary grade levels in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and at German schools elsewhere in Europe. The competition gives the young students an opportunity to become actively involved in current social policy challenges. The Siemens Stiftung has partnered with the esteemed universities RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin and TU Munich to ensure the scientific quality of project submissions. Another key concern is that the participants receive long-term support. The Siemens Stiftung helps the talented young students define their own future through earmarked prize money, information seminars at the partner universities and tutors who provide individual college counseling. As of 2011, the Siemens Stiftung student competition is also a member of Germany’s National Consortium of Student Competitions (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der bundesweiten Schülerwettbewerbe), and has been officially recommended by Germany’s Conference of State Education Ministers since 2012.

About the Siemens Stiftung
ENCOURAGE. empowering people.
The partnership gives education professionals who work in vocational training and continuing education in these countries access to an expanded online library of free teaching materials. A wealth of new content in English and German with an emphasis on science and technology is now available to users of the TVET Portal. State-of-the-art media formats such as interactive whiteboard files, worksheets, and experimentation instructions can now be used in vocational training in the Middle East and North Africa.
“We are pleased to help improve the quality of vocational training in the MENA region through this partnership. The 4,000 instructional media explore real-world issues of science, technology, and ecology, making them an ideal fit with vocational training curricula. We’ve already had positive experience with this in Germany and other countries,” emphasizes Maria Schumm-Tschauder, project director of the Siemens Stiftung media portal.

Since the launch of the competition in June 2012 at the UN Summit for Sustainable Development, inventors and developers have been called upon to submit their tested solutions and products. At the close of the competition on 31st January 2013, over 800 qualified submissions from 90 countries were entered. The aim of the Award is to identify appropriate technical solutions that enable the sustainable improvement of basic supply issues in developing and emerging countries and to make these solutions available to the public.
”We are overwhelmed with the response to the competition! It has already become apparent that we have received innovative and practicable entries in all the categories of the ‘empowering people. Award’”, commented Rolf Huber, Managing Director of the Siemens Stiftung. Submissions have been entered from all around the world with a large proportion coming, as expected, from developing and emerging countries themselves. This is not least due to direct communication via social media channels, which sparked interest in the ”empowering people. Award“ amongst the growing community.
The Siemens Stiftung plans to create an online platform with the entries to the competition. This database of practical solutions and products will also serve as a networking platform designed to bring together inventors and their inventions with people on the ground as well as with NGOs, aid organizations or potential investors. “Over the last few weeks, we have already observed a lively exchange taking place on social media channels between inventors, implementating organizations and potential users in the regions themselves. We are convinced that easier access to, and direct exchange about technical solutions will enable their more effective use in development and aid projects”, stated Huber.
The evaluation phase of the competition has now begun. An expert team will evaluate all the entries submitted according to the criteria defined and create a shortlist of the most promising submissions. A renowned international jury from the fields of commerce, science and developmental cooperation will then select the winners. The Siemens Stiftung will award a sum of 50,000 Euros to the top Prize Winner. The second prize is a total of 30,000 Euros and the third prize a total of 20,000 Euros. A further twenty finalists will be awarded 5,000 Euros each.
The KfW (business area development bank), the Helmholtz Association and the UN-Habitat are partners of the international competition.

Broad STEM portfolio for education professionals
The Siemens Stiftung seeks to generate greater interest in science and technology among young students and keep this interest alive from kindergarten to graduation. The program was developed by educators and focuses on preschool, primary and secondary school teachers. With a diverse methodological approach and broad portfolio of classroom-ready materials, the foundation is helping to protect and improve the quality of education.
Experimento – an educational project with modules for preschools, primary schools, and secondary schools – seeks to illustrate scientific relationships through the principle of discovery-based learning. The project supports teachers with a diverse, curriculum-oriented selection of experiments relating to energy, the environment, and health. The primary project components are experimentation materials with instructions and a teacher training program. Experimento consists of three progressive modules that accompany students from preschool through secondary school. Experimento | 4+ and Experimento | 10+ are already in the pilot phase. The third module, Experimento | 8+ for 8- to 12-year-olds, will be unveiled at didacta.
The media portal offers primary and secondary school teachers access to some 4,000 teaching materials at no cost. The media bring real-world themes to the classroom in the form of content packages for interactive whiteboards, worksheets, and videos on scientific, technical, social, and cultural topics. They can be presented using whiteboards, video projectors, or computers – or simply printed out. The Siemens Stiftung booth at didacta 2013 will feature new media such as worksheets for teaching science to non-native speakers and interactive whiteboard content on topics such as tropical rainforests, symmetry, and air.
Language learning software for interactive German and English instruction
Language comprehension and the ability to express oneself are the foundation for acquiring knowledge – including STEM education. KIKUS digital, a joint project of the Siemens Stiftung and the Center for Multilingualism in Early Childhood, is designed especially for teaching language with the help of computers and whiteboards. The language learning software uses KIKUS picture cards to help preschool and primary school teachers present vocabulary exercises, grammar, and linguistic patterns in a playful environment. Visit the booth for daily live presentations of both the German and English versions and other new features of KIKUS digital.

The diversity of themes and media is a driving factor in the portal’s popularity: nearly 200 of the more than 4,000 teaching materials have already been downloaded more than a thousand times. The growing interest in renewable energies has also been reflected in how the media portal is used, with energy-themed media topping the download rankings. The number one download was the schematic diagram entitled “Energy sources for electrical power,” which illustrates how different forms of energy can be harnessed for human use. Other user favorites include the materials focusing on light and hearing.
The free online platform supports educational professionals and volunteers alike with ready-to-use instructional media such as content packages for interactive whiteboards, preconfigured media packages on specific topics, experiments with step-by-step instructions, and worksheets.
