SCHAUPLAETZE / SETTINGS

Three-part coproduction series

The series concludes with world premieres by Tino Sehgal at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel and Federico León at TACEC in Argentina

June 9 – September 16, 2012
Kassel / Germany
July 20 – December 16, 2012
La Plata, Buenos Aires / Argentina and Berlin / Germany

The “Schauplätze/Settings” series of productions, which was initiated by the Siemens Stiftung, concludes with two artistic projects in which society is made experiential. At dOCUMENTA (13), the artist Tino Sehgal realizes his new project “This Variation” throughout 100 days. And at Centro de Experimentación y Creación del Teatro Argentino de La Plata (TACEC) in Argentina, the author, theater director and filmmaker Federico León presents the world premiere of a piece for 120 performers of all ages; a German version of this piece will be performed at the Berliner Festspiele in  Germany afterwards.

Tino Sehgal, visual artist and choreographer, creates the most ephemeral artworks in the art world and is singularly uncompromising in his striving to produce the immaterial. Economic forms of production per se thus become a theme. For dOCUMENTA (13), Sehgal works with live performers throughout the entire running time of the exhibition. They produce “constructed situations” which visitors encounter in the exhibition space. The hall in Hugenottenhaus in Kassel, which was designed by documenta’s founder Arnold Bode in the 1950s, thus becomes a venue of social concentration.

Federico León "Las Multitudes" / referential image

The starting point for “Las Multitudes,” a piece by the Argentinian artist Federico León, was the idea of assembling 120 performers on one stage. After nearly one full year of rehearsals, this mass of human beings of all ages will perform for the first time on July 20, 2012 at TACEC in Argentina facing the audience as it were a mirror: two anonymous, heterogenous and conflict-fraught crowds that observe each other and gradually find common ground.

Both productions are linked by their mutual interest in a space of encounter and the space between people. They accordingly confront their audiences with individual experience and with the “live act” of producing a society.

A “Schauplatz” (setting, venue) is literally a place attracting everyone’s glances. At culturally significant places in three countries the series draws attention to remarkable artists at the microcosm and macrocosm of society. The three-part series began with Boris Charmatz’s highly regarded piece “enfant” at the most recent Festival d’Avignon, after which “enfant” embarked on a successful European tour. The series ends with “Las Multitudes” by Federico León; after its first series of performances in Argentina, this piece will be realized with German performers at the “Foreign Affairs” festival in Berlin in September 2012, followed by fifteen performances at Centro Cultural San Martín in Buenos Aires in November and Dezember 2012.
