MOVIMIENTO SUR: New Academy Project in Valparaíso, Chile from July 24 to August 9, 2012

A new cultural academy project entitled “Movimiento Sur” is taking shape in Chile. The project expands the existing “Panorama Sur” theatre academy in Buenos Aires into a continually growing platform for interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange. “Movimiento Sur” starts with a three-week pilot project in the newly built Parque Cultural de Valparaíso. Alongside international seminars and workshops, performances from Europe will also be shown. In addition, the Siemens Stiftung provides five grants to artists from Latin American countries.

After “Panorama Sur” in Buenos Aires, “Movimiento Sur” is the second academy project initiated by the Siemens Stiftung in Latin America and will be realized together with the Parque Cultural de Valparaíso, the Goethe-Institut Santiago and the Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes de Chile. Through these activities the Siemens Stiftung helps create a lively network of the diverse theatre scenes in Latin America to direct attention to this continent's own cultural resources.

Innovative movement ideas in interdisciplinary dialogue are the centerpiece of the pilot project in Chile. The first edition focuses on the growing connections between dance and other arts as sought by the renowned choreographer Meg Stuart from the USA in her collaboration with the French video artist Magali Desbazeille. Their collaboratively developed live installation “sand table” turns many of our perspectives on its head. Varinia Canto Vila will lead a workshop exploring ideas from Meg Stuart’s working process, such as the body as an interface of different notions like morphing, zapping, memory and space.

The New Zealander Kate McIntosh, who lives and works in Brussels, is an artist who experiments along the interface between art and science. Her laboratory with objects and everyday materials circles around the apparent clash between the logic of scientific thinking and the imagination of the arts – and how these might disturb and stimulate each other. The workshop is an invitation to re-examine our understanding of reality. With her creation “Dark Matter”, which will be performed in Chile, she approaches the big questions of life in a full-on show-biz late-night theatre style.

The choreographer William Forsythe initiated a paradigm shift in contemporary dance and makes choreographic ideas accessible in other domains. Christopher Roman’s workshop will introduce Forsythe’s “Improvisation Technologies” and encourage the participants to conduct their own movement research.

IIn preparation for the academy, the Chilean curator and art critic Justo Pastor Mellado will introduce current positions about the philosophy of the body.

In addition, Kate McIntosh will lead an imagination workshop for children to re-arrange the world by imagining it differently. Using objects, action and words they can show the new worlds that they imagine – big or tiny, poetical or politi-cal, funny or sad – and ask what these worlds have to offer.

The Parque Cultural de Valparaíso, which opened in January 2012, is a new cultural centre built on the site formerly occupied by a prison in Chile’s port city of Valparaíso. Directed by the Chilean curator and art critic Justo Pastor Mel-lado, it is intended to foster cultural development and to serve as a centre for culture, the arts and the community. The program aims to attract large and diverse audiences from the city and the region, as well as from the national and international cultural scenes and local neighborhoods.
