„SPEECH!“ © Matijević / Chico
“If a man were to speak his mind on an island where there were no human beings, would he still be wrong?” This question is the point of departure for a performance by Barbara Matijević & Giuseppe Chico, an artists’ duo from Zagreb and Paris. In their work, the authors of the trilogy entitled “Theory of the performance to come, or the only way to avoid the massacre is to become its authors?,” challenge our understanding of society, politics and everyday life as narrations.
In their new project under the working title “SPEECH!”, they approach speech as that mode of discourse that bares no claim to truth, and is therefore not about anything but always to someone. It is a speech that invites speech, reminding us that we are its originators. It is a speech that asks: If a man would speak his mind on an island where there were no human beings, would he still be wrong?
