Akili Holdings focus on a model that relies jointly on aggregating production, co-ownership of agricultural businesses, and retooled value chains. Haron Wachira has created a surprising win-win scenario for subsistence farmers and agro-processing businesses in Kenya. This is impressive not only because of the unlikely partnerships formed, but because the agricultural sector in East Africa is chronically mismanaged and poorly coordinated. Despite all this, Haron is working in multiple parts of Kenya, on seven distinct value chains, and with thousands of farmers as his work continues to expand.

Rutuba produces organic fertilizer that adds to nutritive value to crops and has the ability to repair acid soil and thus guarantees higher yields in the long run. There are Rutuba production units in every county in Kenya. Each of these units is partly owned by youth and women groups from the surrounding communities. These groups source the raw materials for production. Hence, they benefit from Rutuba in three ways: from the income earned for the raw materials sourced, from increased yields due to the use of the fertilizer on their own fields and from their shareholding in the production unit. In turn, they participate in the distribution of the product and its promotion to farmers by educating them about the benefits of organic fertilizer.
